SLSA – a mild surfactant for your skin and hair
SLSA is the heart of all our shampoo bars and beauty bars. This mild, sulfate-free detergent cleans effectively while being gentle on both skin and hair. Unlike aggressive sulfates like SLS and SLES, SLSA is derived from coconut oil and is one of the mildest cleansers available. That's why we've chosen SLSA as the base in all our products.
What is SLSA?
SLSA stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate. It is a mild, sulfate-free detergent (surfactant) derived from coconut oil. Although the name is similar to SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), SLSA is a completely different molecule with much milder properties. SLSA are larger molecules that do not penetrate the skin in the same way as SLS, making it very gentle.
How does SLSA work?
SLSA acts as a surfactant, which means that it:
- Cleans effectively – Removes dirt, oil and product residue
- Creates foam – Provides a rich, creamy lather
- Emulsifies – Mixes oil and water so they can be rinsed away
- Gentle cleansing – Cleanses without drying or irritating
- Preserves moisture – Does not strip hair and skin of its natural oils
Advantages of SLSA
1. Sulfate-free and mild
SLSA is sulfate-free and much milder than traditional sulfates like SLS and SLES. It cleanses effectively without drying out skin or hair.
2. Suitable for sensitive skin
Thanks to its mild nature, SLSA is perfect for sensitive skin and scalp. It is non-irritating and rarely causes allergic reactions.
3. Preserves the natural oils of the skin and hair
Unlike harsh sulfates, SLSA does not strip the skin and hair of its natural, protective oils, keeping skin and hair healthy and balanced.
4. Rich, creamy foam
SLSA creates a rich, creamy lather that feels luxurious and makes it easy to apply the product evenly.
5. Biodegradable
SLSA is biodegradable and environmentally friendly. It breaks down naturally and does not harm aquatic organisms.
6. Preserves colored hair
Because SLSA is so gentle, it helps preserve colored hair for longer. The color doesn't fade as quickly as with aggressive sulfates.
7. From natural source
SLSA is extracted from coconut oil, a renewable and sustainable resource. It is a natural alternative to petroleum-based surfactants.
SLSA vs SLS/SLES
It is important to understand the difference between SLSA and traditional sulfates:
SLS/SLES (Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate)
- Aggressive sulfates
- Small molecules that penetrate the skin
- Can dry out skin and hair
- May irritate sensitive skin
- Removes natural oils
- Often petroleum-based
SLSA (Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate)
- Sulfate-free, mild alternative
- Larger molecules that do not penetrate the skin
- Cleans without drying out
- Suitable for sensitive skin
- Preserves natural oils
- From coconut oil
